Summerdown Camp, Eastbourne.
In March 1916 two Victoria Cross holders, Lieutenants Handley Geary and Arthur Fleming-Sandes, appeared on stage together in the play The Second in Command at Summerdown Camp. Both had been awarded the VC a few months earlier, Geary at Hill 60 near Ypres and Fleming-Sandes at the infamous Hohenzollern Redoubt in France.
On Sunday afternoons, volunteers used Eastbourne buses to take injured soldiers for rides round the district. In 1916 buses were also used to take members of the Summerdown Camp band to the bandstand to give concerts. After about six months of this the council complained that the soldiers were being paid for playing and so should not expect free transport to their venue. It was also argued that playing music for money on the Sabbath was a contravention of the Sunday trading laws.
